Bed Buying Tips

These are basic guidelines to help in the purchase of a new bed.

DO

  • Buy the best you can afford.
  • When looking at a new bed don't just prod it. Lie down in your favourite position for a few minutes.
  • Always take your partner to test the bed before purchasing, as partner disturbance is one of the biggest complaints with an old bed.
  • Always wear loose comfortable clothing when you try a bed, remember that most people don't wear a leather jacket in bed.
  • Bed shops won't make you take home the padded display headboard.
  • If you have the room and can afford it, buy a King size bed as this allows for much more personal space - on average you move 40 to 60 times a night with 12 full body turns.
  • Always replace a base and mattress at the same time they are designed to work together.
  • Look for comfort - a bed doesn't have to be as hard as a board to help avoid morning backache, you'll sleep best when you feel cradled in comfort, cozy and secure.
  • Shop for the best value, not the lowest price. You can always find a cheaper bed, but you'll have to sleep on it for a long time.

Your old bed

  • Remember if it's no good for you it's probably no good for any one else - have the bed shop take it away and dispose of it. They could even donate it to the Salvation Army for you.
