BARE BOTTOMED BED or RIP to Bed Valances With all the Otago 150th celebrations going on, I indulged in a little looking back of my own and looked through some old photographs of our Bedpost Store. Yes even us old retailers indulge in nostalgia, especially the small number who have been part of the Dunedin community for many years. We started in the early 90's, our fledgling store in Princes St. with ruffles all over the place, ruffled Valances, Ruffled pillowcases and even ruffled curtains. As we aged, our valances matured into pleats. The look was less fussy, more grown up. Our look matured with our move to Cumberland St, the valances became quilted, the pleats disappeared, the bright colours were replaced with a simple more subdued palette. Now we are at middle age, the most sophisticated, elegant part of our life. The Bed Valance, that bane of many a housekeepers life (please note I have kept this Unisex as people of all sexes complain about valances) has all but disappeared. The Upholstered base has evolved. Sleek, tailored, uncomplicated. A choice of simple elegant colours in subtly textured fabrics that don't wrinkle or hang unevenly or scrunch up as you make the bed. Good hard wearing upholstery grade fabrics that should withstand the everyday wear and tear of home and still look amazing. Better still, if your colour scheme changes or you move house, you can still revert to old faithful, the valance.OK, you may already have seen these at Bedpost, we have had coloured bases for some time, but the latest development is also quite exciting. Many people come into our store and admire the European style Pivotech Flexible Slat system from East West Designs. Whilst the Bed Frames are often admired, for their beauty and Aesthetics, often those elegant Rimu or Beech frames take up too much room, do not match our existing furniture or may not fit the budget.Bedpost now has the Reflex, a Pivotech slat system in a simple stylish upholstered base. This means you have a bed that looks like a standard mattress and base, that is the same size as a standard bed, that fits a standard headboard (you may have one already) but has all the benefits of the ultimate in flexible slat systems - Pivotech The Pivotech slat system has the ability to adjust to each partners comfort preferences. One side can be set up firmer than the other, Extra Lumbar support can be made and even better still, if you want to adjust the feel after you have slept a few nights, that can be done simply by adjusting the tensioner on the slat. Even better, you have a choice of mattresses, from pure latex, to specially designed pocket springs, to Tempur. All work really well, with the added advantage that the flexible slat mattresses, because the slats perform most of the postural support, do not need to be as deep or heavy as many conventional inner sprung mattresses have become. So no mountains to climb, just to go to sleep.I hope you have a chance to come into Bedpost and see for yourself what all the fuss is about |
